On January 29, 2018 Mrs. Bessie Charuhas passed away peacefully in her home in Alexandria, VA. Bessie was born on July 20, 1927 and raised in Alexandria VA to Greek immigrant parents Sotiri (Tom) from Thraki, Greece and Anna Meletis from Peramos, Asia Minor, and grew up in a loving family with her younger brothers Evangelos (Andy) and Euripides (Pete). Shortly after graduating from Alexandria's George Washington High School in 1945, she married a returning World War II soldier Nicholas Charuhas, to whom she was a beloved wife until his death in 2003. Bessie was a devoted mother whose greatest enjoyment was her family and grandchildren. She was a founding member of Daughters of Penelope Helle Chapter and its first President.
Bessie is survived by daughter Kitty Xidon(Jim), son George(Mary) and grandchildren -George Xidon, Nicholas Xidon, and Vasiliki Charuhas, and brother Peter Meletis. Bessie is preceded in death by her husband Nicholas, child Sotiri, and brother Angelo Meletis.
The family will receive relatives and friends on February 6 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at EVERLY- WHEATLEY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria. Funeral services will be held on February 7 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church, 3149 Glen Carlyn Rd., Falls Church, VA. A memorial service will be held in the community hall after the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church.
