Demetrios John “Jim” Gadonas, Age 78, died on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Alexandria Hospital. A Native Alexandrian, he was born at Alexandria Hospital on February 26, 1939. He was the son of John D. Gadonas and Zoe J. Gadonas. His father, Mr. Gadonas was the proprietor of the Landmark establishment the Majestic café on King Street. He was educated in the Alexandria City public schools. He participated in recreational youth league and high school sports. He graduated from the old George Washington High school in the class of 1957. He then attended the old Columbia prep school in Washington, DC. He started working as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office. In the early 1960’s he began a long career of over three decades on Capitol Hill. Around 1961 he began working as an elevator operator. Around 1967 he became a U.S. capital police officer, serving until early 1976. He then began to work for the office of the clerk, U.S. House of Representatives. He retired from the position in 1995. He then worked for about a decade with the Radisson Hotel in north old town Alexandria. He served in the Virginia Army National Guard from 1962-1968. He want to basic training at Fort Jackson, SC , and signal corps school at Fort Gordon, GA. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in government from the University of Maryland in January 1972. He was a home owner in the Waynewood neighborhood of Fort Hunt for nearly 40 years. He was an avid follower of sports, running the gamut from organized college and pro leagues to golf, tennis, horse racing, and boxing. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two sisters, Pauline J. Gadonas, and Eugenia “Virginia” J. Gadonas. Both of Alexandria. He is survived by his two nephews, Gregory G. Paspatis, and John D. Paspatis, both of Alexandria.
On Wednesday, November 29th,a visitation will be held at Everly-Wheatley funeral home 1500 W. Braddock Rd. Alexandria, VA 22302 from 5-8 PM. On Thursday, November 30th a Funeral will be held at St. Katherine’s Greek orthodox Church in Falls Church, VA with interment at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria.
