Ella Miller Hooe, known lifelong as “Ella Miller”, died on December 5, 2017, at the age of 99.
Ms. Hooe was born on April 4, 1918, in King George, Virginia, at “Barnesfield”, the Hooe ancestral home. She was descended from several old Virginia families. Her ancestors operated the old Hooe’s Ferries crossing the Potomac at King George and Alexandria; Hooe’s Road in Fairfax County is named for them.
Ms. Hooe was raised in Hyattsville, MD, and Washington, DC, graduating from the old Western High School in Washington in 1937. She pursued a successful career in the US Foreign Service with postings in Bonn, Berlin, London, Jakarta, New Zealand and Damascus; assignments included secretary to James Conant, first US Ambassador to West Germany after World War II.
On retiring from the Foreign Service, she was an accomplished portrait and landscape artist, exhibiting at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA, her chosen hometown, and also working with the North Windsor Artists in King George, a group founded by the late John S. (Jack) Darling, a relative by marriage and a prominent Virginia artist.
Ms. Hooe was named after her mother's guardian. She is predeceased by her brother and sister (who died in infancy and early childhood, respectively), father Rice Hooe, a prominent Washington attorney, and mother Mary Grymes Hooe. She is survived by many cousins and friends.
Ms. Hooe will be buried in the Hooe family plot at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, King George, VA, on January 6, 2018, at 12 noon. Arrangements are being handled by Everly-Wheatley of Alexandria. The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
