Julien G Randolph Sr.

February 14, 1933 ~ February 14, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old
Julien Gantling Randolph, Sr., (Randy), left this life on his 84th Birthday. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Juliette Gantling Randolph and Lewis Randolph, who preceded him in death. He was the middle child of three children, and was also preceded in death by his sister, Theodosia Randolph, his brother, Rev. Michael P.G.G. Randolph, a step-son William (Billy) Johnson and a step-daughter, Yvonne Riddick.

After graduating Jefferson High in Brooklyn, he attended Long Island University (LIU), and later served in the U. S. Army for more than 20 years. While in the military, he served in the Airborne Department, during which time he made hundreds of parachute jumps. He has served at many bases throughout the United States: the 101st at Fort Campbell, KY; the 82nd at Fort Bragg, NC; and the 109th at Fort Lee in Petersburg, VA among them. He also served two tours in Germany, once with the 557 and a tour in Viet Nam with the 383rd Detachment, Quartermaster Air Delivery. He returned from Viet Nam in 1966 and was assigned to the Defense General Supply Center in Richmond, Virginia, where he met and married his wife, Mable Perkins Johnson, of 48 years.

In 1969, they had a son, Julien Gantling Randolph, Jr. (Gant). That same year, Mable, along with her new born and two children from a previous marriage, left for Germany to join her husband in Idar-Oberstein, where they remained until 1972. Upon their return to Richmond, they became members of St. Phillips Episcopal Church.

Julien retired from the Army in 1974, at Fort Lee, VA and was hired that same year as a manager by C&P Telephone Co. (now known as Verizon). During that time, Julien went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1978. After graduation, he joined the local chapter of the SIGMA Fraternity, and in 1979, due to a job transfer, he and his family moved to Alexandria, VA. Julien retired from Verizon in 1997.

Julien’s greatest joy was to serve. From 1979, when he arrived to Northern Virginia, until his health declined in 2016, Julien actively served at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill. In addition to having served on the Vestry, he also served as Senior Warden from 1994 to 1995. The extent of his business affiliations and volunteer work on various boards and organizations has spanned more than thirty-five years. In fact, he dedicated his life to serving others and was always the “go- to guy” on various jobs and subjects.

Julien enjoyed working with the Outreach committee for which he chaired for approximately 15 years. During those years, Julien worked diligently with members of the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM) in spreading the word about the seriousness of HIV/AIDS and its prevention. The Outreach budget served and supported many local, national and international ministries. Among the local organizations that the Outreach programs supported were ALIVE, Carpenter’s Shelter, Christ House Community Lodgings, Hopkins House, the St. Clements’s Homeless Overflow Shelter, the Alexandria Teaching Consortium and Alexandria Human Services. Julien also served as a member of the Virginia Organization Responding to AIDS (VORA). Another of his Outreach volunteer duties entailed mentoring single mothers on how to prepare for job interviews and how to manage their finances.

Julien served as president of Different Drum for one year, an organization that sought to create educational opportunities for teen-age children with emotional difficulties from Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax County, and Loudon County. Overall, Julien has contributed much of his time toward human welfare and social services within our local community.

In April 2012, Julien and his wife moved to Goodwin House Alexandria and in 2013, Julien was nominated for The Alexandria Citizen of the Year Award.

Recognition from other Business Affiliations and Volunteer Work in Community Service included:
ØOutreach Achievement Award, Immanuel Church-on-the Hill - 1998
ØAppreciation for Service Award, NOVAM - 1990-2005
ØCertificate of Achievement Award, Alexandria – 2000 (for outstanding service helping Alexandrians achieve self sufficiency)
ØVolunteer of the Year Award, NOVAM – 2002
ØGrandmaster Orator of Fleet Operations, Verizon - 1997
ØPumpkin Patch Volunteer, Immanuel Church-On-the Hill
ØOutreach Committee at Goodwin House, Alexandria

His second passion was that of taking care of and giving to his family. Both family and friends looked to him for counsel and advice. In addition to dedicating his time, he also contributed monetarily to various organizations throughout his life; his way of giving back. He had a great love for his church and served as long as his health permitted.

He had a penchant for “cooking,” and for many years, he became the “Chef in Residence” as he cooked his way into our hearts. Since moving to Goodwin House, Julien’s son, Gant along with his wife, Heather have taken up the mantle of cooking in the family tradition for all holiday and birthday celebrations and other notable occasions.

In 2015, Julien and Mable celebrated their wedding anniversary with friends at Goodwin House, as they dined over a champagne dinner. What fun and laughs they had as they shared stories and their Wedding Album of 1968.

During their marriage, Julien and Mable traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe in addition to cruising to several other countries. Although it became more difficult, as he aged, to do the things he desired to do; Julien continued to serve whenever and wherever he could until his death.

Julien is survived by his wife Mable Randolph, son, Julien (Gant) Randolph, Jr (Heather), four grandchildren: Mercedes Riddick of Richmond, Julien Gantling Randolph, III, Maxwell (Max) Edward Randolph, and Gabrielle (Gabi) Joy Randolph; niece, Joy Randolph of Raleigh, NC; a devoted cousin, Edna M. Jones of White Plains, NY and other relatives and friends.

Our lives have been filled with many, many blessings. Julien was not only my best friend, but he also was a model husband, a great dad, granddad and friend. Although we have lost numerous family members, God has given us four beautiful grandchildren, and we therefore give thanks to Him for our remaining family and for the countless blessings we’ve been given throughout our lives.

So Rest in Peace Our Beloved. We Hope to See You Again Someday!
