June W. Brown, 84, passed away peacefully after a short illness on April 12, 2017 in her home in Arlington, Virginia.
June was born in Baltimore, MD to the late Maxine Witunsky and Edwin Winters on June 30, 1932. She was raised by her loving grandparents, William and Alice Winters and her father. She graduated from Eastern High School in Baltimore in 1950.
June met her husband, Jacob C. Brown, CAPT, USN (Ret.) in 1950
during his second year at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. They married in 1952 upon Jake’s graduation and started their wonderful life adventure which included 12 moves and posts in Key West, FL, Charleston, SC, Norfolk, VA and Arlington, VA . June was the quintessential Navy wife, making a beautiful home for her family wherever the Navy sent them, and a dedicated supporter of her husband’s career. Her graciousness and charm endeared her to all and she and Jake developed many life-long friendships with every move. June was a wonderful hostess and cook and was known for her entertaining. She enjoyed gardening and needlepoint. But mostly she enjoyed people and people loved June. Beautiful inside and out, always with a smile and kind word to others, June will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known her.
June was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church since 1962, where she volunteered her time generously for many different causes.
June worked in various jobs over the years, most of which involved the tour industry in Washington, DC.
June is survived by her loving husband, Jacob C. Brown CAPT, USN (Ret.), daughter Kathryn B. Nelson of Alexandria, VA, son David W. Brown (Sue) of Gaithersburg, MD, grandson Russell W. Brown of Frederick, MD, grandson LTJG Eric R. Brown, USN of Virginia Beach, VA and sister Maxine Guertler of Catonsville, MD.
A celebration of her life will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, 2315 S. Grant St., Arlington, VA on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 1 pm followed by a luncheon at the church.
