Katherine Marie Lane (Whitehouse)

Katherine Marie Lane, surrounded by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2018 at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia following a brief illness. She was born on July 3, 1945 in Kansas City, Kansas, but raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Roosevelt Whitehouse, Jr. and Mary Margaret Lyons Whitehouse. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she is survived by her husband of 54 years, Michael Stuart Lane, Sr., her three children; Laurie Jennifer Kilcoyne (Michael), Kristy Shannon Terrazas (Rudy) and Michael Stuart Lane, Jr. (Kumutha) and seven grandchildren; Michael Kilcoyne, Megan Kilcoyne, Daniel Kilcoyne, Anthony Terrazas, Ireland Terrazas, Meena Lane and Kaviya Lane; her sister, Lindy Whitehouse Williams and her brother-in-law, Bruce Williams, and her nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. At her request, cremation services were chosen and a private celebration of her life will be held by her family at a later date. She was deeply devoted to her family and will be so missed by them. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.

My thoughts today…“We had our first date in November 1958, and recently celebrated our 54th year of marriage on November 4th. I remember the first time I ever saw her walking to class at Shawnee High School. Those green eyes, her big smile and her beautiful face. I am the luckiest guy on earth to have been able to share and enjoy so many wonderful years with her. She was such a beautiful person in every sense of the word, inside and out. Her children and grandchildren were such a joy to her and she loved them so much and I know they will miss her as much as I and the rest of the family. I really cannot find the words to adequately express the depths of my sadness and grief on her passing. On more than one occasion she asked me if we loved each other too much and I said to her that's impossible. We've always been such a private couple, but I wanted to share our feelings after her passing. My greatest wish now is that someday I will see her again and we will again be reunited.”

“A few weeks ago, just after her diagnosis, Kathy and I told each other how lucky we both have been to find each other and to have enjoyed the life we shared together. We talked about the family we had been so blessed with, our three children, their spouses, and our seven grandchildren. She told me that she never dreamed we would be able to do so much, travel to as many places as we had been fortunate enough to visit, and I said to her that I hadn’t either. Over the years we were lucky enough to enjoy visits to Anchorage, Alaska; Toronto and Vancouver British Columbia, Canada; Paris, France; Brussels, Belgium, all of the British Isles; Munich and Berlin, Germany; Rome, Italy; Beijing, China and St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. After we left Louisville in 1970 for a job opportunity that I had in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, my jobs later also afforded us the opportunity to live on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, in Atlanta, Georgia, a year in New York City, and for the greater part of six years in London, England. Throughout my adult life, Kathy provided me with her unwavering and devoted love and spiritual support both at home and in my career. I have had to do a lot of writing in my career, and she was my editor who made me look better than I was. She once said to me that we are better together than separately, and she was so right, although I do believe I got the better of that deal. We have a plaque on a wall in our home that says, ‘We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.’ And, together, we really did!...”~ Michael Lane
