Mary Earlyne Karstens
Born : January 26, 1962
Died: February 21, 2017
In the early hours of February 21, Mary Karstens lost her struggle with cancer after a protracted illness. Mary was a valiant fighter; refusing to give the deadly disease any quarter to the end. Mary was born in Wayne, New Jersey, the only daughter of William and Earlyne Karstens. She grew up in Andover, Massachusetts and graduated from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, eventually moving to Washington DC. After working in the Information Technology field, Mary made her home in the tight-knit community of Del Ray, in Alexandria, where she is fondly remembered for her generous spirit. There wasn’t an activity in Del Ray that Mary wasn’t involved with, from Art on the Avenue, to the Halloween Parade, to the Del Ray Business Association. She was a Board Member and volunteer for Community Partners for Children, organizing Alexandria’s largest back-to-school and toy drive. She loved music of all genres, literature, art, and the theater. She was an accomplished photographer, a skill she put to use on numerous trips. She was also an amazing cook- an accomplishment for which all of her friends are truly grateful.
She is survived by her brothers, Richard Karstens, of Seattle Washington, Kenneth Karstens of Madison, Wisconsin, and her beloved aunts; Rosalie Scudellari, of Wayne, New Jersey and Louise Bello, of Port Jervis, NY.
A memorial service will be held at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home from 6-8 pm on Friday, February 24, 2017. A memorial Mass will be held in Kinnelon, NJ at a future date.
