Thomas E. Johnson, FAIA

Thomas E. Johnson, 62, passed away on August 14 at Ocracoke Island, NC, a beloved family vacation location for more than 30 years. He was a founding partner at Martinez + Johnson Architecture. For nearly 40 years Mr. Johnson was involved with a wide variety of architectural projects focusing on the preservation of historic theaters, schools and libraries, and the design of new cultural arts centers. Throughout the last 23 years, he led projects that propelled his firm to national recognition. In 2015, he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Johnson earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia and holds bachelors degrees in architecture from University College Dublin and Clemson University. As an active community member, he served on the boards of the American Horticultural Society, Wesley Housing Development Corporation, the League of Historic American Theaters and the Montessori School of Virginia. An Alexandria, Virginia native, Mr. Johnson was an avid reader, fly fisherman, tennis player and car enthusiast. He enjoyed traveling and weekends at Virginia's Northern Neck with family and friends.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 28 years, Julianne Mueller, and two children, Natalie and Garrett, mother Margaret Emhardt Johnson, sister, Rev. Sarah Lee Nelson and brother, William Harrison Johnson (Tracy Schario Johnson). He is preceded in death by his father Thomas Frank Johnson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 19, 12:00 pm, at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria. Donations may be made in his honor to Wesley Housing Development Corporation or University of Virginia School of Architecture. A condolence registry may be found at www.everlywheatley.com
