Elizabeth Stewart Clement was born on September 24, 1928, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and died on September 27, 2015, in Alexandria, Virginia, after a brief illness. She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Col. Coleman C. Clement, Jr., USA, Ret. She is also survived by her children: Catherine R. Clement (Sandy Modell), Clare Stober, Richard L. Clement (Laura W. Clement), her six grandchildren: Coleman P. Schenning (Lauren Rash Schenning), Catherine E. Schenning Pearson (Michael Pearson), Lee D. Clement, Jackson S. Clement, James E. Clement, Mollie E. Clement, and her great-granddaughter, Margaret Pearson. She is also survived by her sister, E. Jacqueline Stewart and brother, Richards O. Stewart, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Elizabeth attended the Telfair Academy in Savannah, Georgia, and the High Museum of Art School, in Atlanta Georgia. In 1948, she married Coleman C. Clement, Jr., a U.S. Army officer, and managed the family for 25 years at various postings in the United States, Europe, Asia and Central America. Coleman and Elizabeth lived in Alexandria from 1968 to 1980, during which time Elizabeth was a founding member of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. In 1980, they retired to Winter Haven, Florida, where Elizabeth continued to pursue her career as a painter and teacher of art. In 2007, they moved to the Washington House, Alexandria, Virginia.
On November 1, 2015, Fr. Carlton C. Clarke, of All Angels Anglican Church, will conduct a brief memorial service at 3:00 p.m. at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 West Braddock Road, Alexandria.
