David Harold Thaxton passed away quietly in his home in Harrisonburg, Virginia on April 16, 2022. David was the 7th child born of 15 children to his parents, James Odie Thaxton and Margaret Lucille (Washington) Thaxton on July 12, 1933, in Bramwell, West Virginia.
After graduating from Bluestone High School, he headed north to Detroit, MI to work in the automobile industry. While there, he was drafted into the Army in December 1953. In the military, he met and married a fellow soldier, Joyce Yvonne (Hill) Thaxton, his wife of 64 years. David retired from the Army on June 1, 1980, and went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 20 years before retiring a second time.
David was a master storyteller. Most of his stories ended with the hardy laughter of anyone listening. David fashioned himself as a pitmaster – nobody made better barbecue ribs. His smile and easy-going nature often brought friends and family to him, seeking sound advice. He loved his family, family gatherings, a good party, and fishing from his boats. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 2nd from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm – immediately followed by his funeral service at 12:00 pm at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria VA 22302. Interment will occur at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
