Don was born on April 11, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Dobbs Ferry. He passed away on November 27, 2022, at age 91, in his Alexandria home, surrounded by his devoted daughters. He was the beloved husband for 67 years to Barbara J. Heflin who predeceased him; loving father of Shannon, Kelly, and Christopher (Kendra); and proud grandfather to Michael, Alexis, Luke, Tate, and Cooper. He’s also survived by his dear sister-in-law, Betty Dunleavy, nephews, Kevin (Mary Ann), and Mark (Jill), and nieces Kristie (Abdel), and Kerry.
Don served in the United States Air Force from 1948 – 1952, and fought in the Korean War. He earned many medals including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Don worked at Pepco his entire career and retired after over 40 years of service. Many of his Pepco colleagues became life-long friends.
Don enjoyed a good game of golf as well as hunting and fishing. He liked most sports and followed all of the local teams. In particular, he was a big Alabama football fan after his eldest grandson graduated from that school.
Don was the life of the party! He had a great sense of humor and was always quick with a joke or clever remark. He was rather a “tough guy” – hard working, confident, capable, in charge. But he also had a tender side – devoted especially to his family, and extremely loyal to his friends.
He lived a good life and was a happy and contented man, surrounded by a wide circle of friends, wonderful neighbors, and an adoring family. Don was an inspiration to many people. He made a difference in this world, and he will be deeply missed.
