Donald James (“J.D.”) Fosdick passed away at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, on September 2, 2021, at the age of 96.
J.D. was a lifelong educator, working for close to 30 years at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C. and on reservations in Utah and Nevada to advance the education of Native Americans. His roles included teacher, principal and education specialist, and he capped his career as the BIA’s acting director.
An avid boater and waterman, talented cook and frequent international traveler, J.D. was a past Commodore of the Washington Yacht Club and an instructor and vessel examiner for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Alexandria and a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council of St. Bernadette’s Parish in Springfield, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife Cora Prifold(Beebe) Fosdick of Alexandria, two daughters, Julie Bannerman of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Catherine Bruns of Lusby, Maryland, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and his cousin Joanne Seidler Biedinger of Mason, Ohio. He was predeceased by his brothers Frank and Richard.
J.D. had an infectious smile and a generous spirit. He enjoyed life to the fullest and leaves behind a loving family, countless friends and a legacy of professional achievement and good works.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1427 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22302. In lieu of flowers, donations in J.D.’s memory may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at the above address or to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Association Flotilla 25-01 at 550 Water Street, S.W., Washington, DC 20024.
