Doris Gilbert died January 20th, age 95 while residing at the Colonnades in Charlottesville, VA. Born in Maplewood, NJ she attended Cedar Crest College in PA and graduated from Upsala College, NJ. In 1945 she married Bertram C. Gilbert, Chaplain USN. At the onset of the Korean War her husband was recruited to the Army where he served until the 1970’s.
During this time, she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science at Catholic University. She became the librarian for the Army Chaplains school in Fort Hamilton, NY and later the Sherwood Library in Alexandria, VA.
She was active in her church, acted as a docent for historic sites in Old Town Alexandria: Participated in a women’s French speaking association, book and bridge clubs and monthly fellowship with retired Sherwood librarians. She was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church.
Doris is survived by her son David, daughter Cynthia, her loving daughter in law Molly, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Burial service to be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, March 5th at 10am.
