Doris Starns, age 100, passed away peacefully on November 11 2023 with her family by her side. Born June 4, 1923 in York, PA, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Anna Fortney.
Doris was a loving wife, devoted mother and doting grandmother (Mimi). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Charles E. Starns. She is survived by her two daughters, Joy Marie Gorham and Sherry L. Leach, as well as her grandson Ryan J. Leach.
Doris had a successful career with the Department of Air Force at the Pentagon where she worked as a Clerk Stenographer for 20 years before raising her family.
Faith, family and friends were the heart and soul of her being. She graciously sacrificed for her family and friends, and inspired so many with her generous love, strong faith, kindness, support and gratitude. Doris will be fondly remembered for her endless love and cherished devotion to her grandson. She was a true blessing to the many lives she touched.
Doris enjoyed dancing, gardening, singing in church, sewing, and always had a love for learning. She was an avid pianist, playing in many piano recitals as well as Job's Daughters events.
Doris graduated from Roosevelt High School, in Washington, DC, in 1941. She met the love of her life, Charles E. Starns (Charlie), on a blind date and the rest is history. They married in 1952 and resided in Arlington, VA before later moving to Alexandria, VA in 1960 where they were lifetime residents.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon at the Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22302 followed by a Celebration of Life service at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
