Florence Prisaznick Conlon Pulwers, born on April 16, 1924 in Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on October 7, 2020, at the age of 96. She was the daughter of Russian immigrants Thomas Prisaznick and Nellie Lemeshewsky Prisaznick.
She leaves her children George P. Conlon (Gayle), Christina A. Conlon Carter (Charles), Paul M. Conlon (Rindy), Therese M. Conlon, Clare H. Conlon, Patrick T. Conlon (Mona), and Gerard J. Conlon (Linda), 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She also leaves her sister Janet P. Hahn. She was predeceased by her daughter Mary A. Conlon Komm and her son Peter J. Conlon IV, as well as her first husband Peter J. Conlon III and her second husband Jack E. Pulwers.
Florence was raised on Stewart Avenue in the Del Ray section of Alexandria, and graduated from George Washington High School. She worked during World War II for the Defense Department, including a stint on Martha’s Vineyard working on a secret project for the Navy. After raising her 9 children, she went back to work for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon, and retired from there.
Florence was married first to Pete Conlon at the old St. Rita’s Church on Hickory Street in Alexandria, and they had a long marriage, abundant in children and love. After Pete’s young death, she married Jack Pulwers at the present St. Rita Church, and they were together for many years until his death.
Florence loved cooking for large gatherings, collecting recipes, and having family around. She was a seeker of knowledge and so she loved meeting people, traveling to new places, and scouring the newspaper for new discoveries. She was an artist, and many people received tokens of her talent.
She will be missed by her family and many others whose lives she touched.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing prior to Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rita Church, 3815 Russell Road, Alexandria, Virginia, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1001 South Royal Street, Alexandria, Virginia. See details below.
