Georgia Louise Shepherd Maas, 71, of Alexandria, passed away suddenly on May 28, 2017, at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC, after a brief illness.
Georgia was born on September 21, 1945, in Allentown, PA, the daughter of George E. Shepherd, a businessman, and Myrtle Minnich Shepherd, a schoolteacher. After graduating from Parkland High School, Allentown, she received an AB in German Literature (cum laude) from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY, and an MA in German Literature from Middlebury College,
Middlebury, VT/Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, Germany. She was ABD in Comparative Literature at New York University.
After graduating from Vassar, she was a schoolteacher in Kingston, NY; after her marriage, in 1973, she helped support her family in New York City, West Park, NY, and Poughkeepsie, NY, through temp work and teaching, before finding her calling as an editor, proofreader, and copyeditor at Random House and Oxford University Press in New York City in the mid-1990s.
In 2011, she and her husband moved from Brooklyn, NY, to Alexandria to be with her daughter and her soon-to-be-born grandchild. She loved cooking, mystery novels, classical music (especially ballet and Mozart’s operas), watching Love Actually with her daughter, cats, the ocean, and annual travel to England; and she was becoming increasingly involved in her faith
community. She spent a significant portion of each week in activities with her granddaughter as she grew into school age: picking her up from school, making her lunch, taking her shopping, baking cookies and making ice cream, reading to her, and encouraging her to create art.
She is survived by her husband of almost 44 years, the Rev. Jan A. Maas, her daughter, Katherine H. Maas, son-in-law, Dan Hicks, and granddaughter, Caroline Maas Hicks. She also leaves behind a wide circle of friends, not only in her parish, Immanuel Church-on- the-Hill (Episcopal) in Alexandria, but across the country. As news of her death spread, her family received an outpouring of support from her friends who remember her as kind, generous, and loving. She is greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
