Irene Curran Montie

Tribute

Of Alexandria, Virginia, on December 23, 2018, age 97. Native of Greene County, New York; former resident of Royal Oak, Michigan; resident of the National Capital Region for 53 years.

A strong believer in education and upward mobility for women, Irene was the holder of seven collegiate degrees: Associate in Arts (2), Bachelor of Arts (1), Bachelor of Science (1), Master of Arts (2), and Doctor of Philosophy (Statistics). In Michigan she was the cofounder and principal operator of a successful childcare facility before becoming a civilian employee of the US Bureau of the Census. Promoted by the Census Bureau to the National Capital Region in 1965, she served as Chief of the Census Bureau’s Statistical Methods Division before joining the newly formed Department of Energy, and later the Office of Management and Budget. She retired from government service as a member of the Senior Executive Service. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Irene also served as an active member and officer of the American Statistical Association, and was a past President of the Caucus for Women in Statistics.

Irene was the youngest child born into the Irish family of Michael Edward and Catherine Keogh Curran of Elka Park, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Walter G. Montie; son John Charles Montie; grandchildren Ian and Cathleen; and great-grandchild Zachary. She is survived by her sons Michael and Thomas; daughters Kitty and Suzanne; grandchildren Melissa, Dominick, Montie and Genevieve; and great-grandchildren Ethan, Sylvie and Eva.

A private memorial service was held at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, Alexandria, VA, on December 28, 2018. A private Mass of Christian Burial and interment will take place in Greene County, New York, in August, 2019. In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives are invited to contribute in Irene’s name to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mountain House Road, Haines Falls, NY 12436.
