My deep condolences to the family and all who knew Joan. My oldest child began Alexandria Country Day School under her guidance and we will forever be grateful to her visionary leadership. The quote that a teacher touches eternity rings true for we never know how far her influence will extend.

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you again to a woman who shaped my life. I had the privilege of attending the Alexandria Country Day school from third through eighth grade. Dr. Barton was one of the most important teachers and leaders in my experience. I have gone on to be a teacher and educational researcher; my work is constantly guided by Dr. Barton's influence and inspiration. Both in my writing and my teaching, not a day goes by without thinking back to my time at ACDS, and the possibilities made visible to me there. Although she is gone, I will continue to be Dr. Barton's student for the rest of my life. I am so grateful for all she made possible for me as a student, and the possibilities she continues to open for me in my practice.

Ever a champion for all of our children−uncovering the unique and special gifts each have, unlocking the untold preciousness in their hearts. You imbued your love of literature and thirst for knowledge in your teaching practice. You revealed a much larger world worthy of exploration to children and enriched the world by demonstrating daily the meaning of what it is to cherish a child.
