John Richard Lumsden Jr., (87), of Alexandria, Va passed away February 15, 2021 with his family by his side. Born November 08, 1933 at Columbia Hospital in Washington, DC and Died: February 15 2021 in Fairfax County, Virginia. John was the son of Richard Lumsden Sr. and Grace Mildred Duncan Lumsden. At age 3, John’s first adventure was when John wandered away from home and boarded a bus in Washington, DC. He was missing until discovered in Mt. Vernon, Va-The home of George Washington on February 22- George’s Birthday. He graduated from Janney Grade School and Alice Deal Jr. High School in Washington, DC. John became friends with members of the Connie B. Gay WARL Radio Station in Arlington, Va in the late 1940’s and accompanied Connie and group to attend the Grand Ole Opry in 1949 when he was a young teenager. John graduated from Washington-Lee High School Class of 1951 in Arlington, Va. John was awarded a scholarship to Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, DC. He graduated in 1954 with a Commercial Science Degree and also received a Master’s Degree in Commercial Science in 1958. During this period John also served in the US Army. In 1962 John was recognized by the State of Virginia as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1955 John married Mary Eugenia DeVault. They raised 4 daughters: Sally, Cheryl, Virginia, and Linda. John retired from the Federal Government in 1995 with 32 years of service. In addition John also spent 32 years as a Contractor with The Washington Post as a home delivery manager in Alexandria, Va and retired in 1988. Mary worked alongside him on the Post contract. John and Mary were able to travel extensively during their lifetime. John spent many years with the Scottish Saint Andrews Society, The Sons of Confederate Veterans and The Military Order of Stars and Bars. These latter two groups he served Commander. John was also an Assistant Commissioner of the Clan Lumsden Society in the USA. John also formed a Local Chapter of Clan Lumsden Society. In 2000 John was one of the Founders of The Washington-Lee High School Alumni Association and served as Treasurer for a number of years. John was also a member of several other organizations. His hobbies included travel, American Military History, Country Music, Antique Vintage Cars-His beloved 1950 Mercury-The General, Baseball, and Football. He leaves behind his wife Mary, 4 daughters, along with their families, 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a great-great granddaughter. Viewing will be at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, Va on February 24th, 2021 at 9:30a.m. Church Services for a “Celebration of Life” will be held at a later date at Trinity United Methodist Church 2911 Cameron Mills Rd. Alexandria, Va. Burial will be at Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Rd, Triangle, Va.
