January 27, 1941 ~ January 31, 2024 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Tribute

Joseph “Joe” McGonnell was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He passed away peacefully on January 31, 2024, after a lengthy illness.

Joe was born to Joseph and Mary McGonnell in Philadelphia in 1941. After graduating from Villanova University, he started his highly successful career by applying his electrical engineering skills working for General Dynamics on the Atlas Centaur rocket program that performed key missions that paved the way for the Apollo landings on the Moon. This was followed by more than four decades of key leadership positions within both DuPont and National Starch and Chemical spanning seven US states and Germany.

Joe married the love of his life, Sabina Freeburn McGonnell, in December 1964 and remained married for 57 years until her passing in 2022. Joe is survived by his four children: Robin Gervasoni (Portland, OR), Joe Jr. and Jeri McGonnell (Phoenix, AZ), Dr.s Chris McGonnell and Ann Liu (Dallas, TX), and Heather and Scot Schrager (Burke, VA), as well as seven grandchildren who he adored greatly: Brandon, Abby, Jordan, Liam, Lucas, Samantha, and Alyssa.

In addition to his family and friends, Joe had several passions. He was an avid golfer for more than six decades with seven aces to his resume. He was an extensive world traveler both for work and pleasure, visiting more than 45 countries across all seven continents. Joe was also a fanatical Villanova basketball supporter, watching or attending games any chance he had.
