On Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Loving mother of Maribeth McCarthy; adored grandmother of Jack and Luke; sister of Eileen Morrill and Don Atkinson, beloved aunt of Debra, Mitchell, Daryl, Whit, Todd, Mark, Terry, Eileen, Kathy, Ed, Scott and Michael. MJ was preceded in death by her husband, Jack McCarthy, and brothers, Jack and Larry Atkinson.

MJ had an accomplished career in higher education administration before she happily retired in 1999. She was an accomplished athlete and an avid golfer. She taught both her grandsons Jack and Luke to play and love the game. She also loved her Baltimore Colts until they moved--she never quite got over that--but adopted her grandchildren's passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers in later years. MJ was completely dedicated to her family. She loved spending time with her extended and adopted family, and would drop everything to help any friend or family in need. She was a remarkable human being and will be missed by so many people who love her.

Relatives and friends may gather at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22302 on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 11 am to 12 pm, followed by a Memorial Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1427 W Braddock Rd, Alexandria, VA 22302 at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and Heartland Hospice.
