Patricia Hilderbrand Back

Patricia Hilderbrand Back died on April 15th after a brief illness.  She is survived by her daughter, Kelli Back (Gary Pemberton) and her son, Jeffrey Back (Erika Back).  Patricia grew up and spent most of her life in Indiana.  She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1955.  She married Dean Back in 1959 (they remained married for 25 years) and lived in Hawaii in the early 1960s.  In 2020, Patricia moved to Alexandria, Virginia to live with her daughter.

Patricia had a servant’s heart and cared deeply for others.  She volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Anderson, Indiana, and worked for several years as a home health aide.  She was a creative individual, who loved gardening and landscaping.  In 1988, she got her dream job with Heartland Growers, which kept her surrounded by flowers and co-workers whose company she relished.  She retired from Heartland in 2002 to take care of her mother.  Patricia was affiliated with several churches as she moved around Indiana.

Patricia’s favorite activity was spending time and laughing with her family and numerous friends.  She loved a good adventure, dinner parties, and going out to her favorite restaurants, where the staff treated her like family.

Patricia will be remembered for her kindness, her loving nature, and sense of humor.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Annabelle Steiner Hilderbrand, and her father, Robert Hilderbrand.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:30am on Friday, April 26th at Washington Street United Methodist Church at 109 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314.  A graveside service will follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Open Table program at Washington Street United Methodist Church.
