Robert K. (Bob) Harwood, Jr., age 83, passed away on November 8, 2017 at his home in Alexandria, VA. Visitation services will be held at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home on Friday, November 17, 2017 from
3-5pm and from 6-8pm. A life celebration will also be held at Belle Haven Country Club on Sunday, December 3, from 12:30 – 3pm.

Bob was born in Huntington, TN to Robert and Ruby Harwood on June 14, 1934. He attended Plant High School in Tampa, FL graduating in 1952 and went on to Florida State University where he was a member of the golf team. Bob then joined the U. S. Air Force, and after successfully completing flight training school, became a fighter pilot and honorably served our nation for over 20 years. His tours of duty took him from Andrews AFB to Egypt, Greece, Vietnam, Thailand and Hawaii. While serving in Cairo, Egypt, he and his family were evacuated to Greece during the outbreak of the Six-Day War in 1967. While in Athens, Greece, he was designated an honorary member of the Hellenic Army Aviation Service, the first foreign officer to ever receive such an honor. Bob also received numerous other honors and awards throughout his military career.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1974, Bob worked for aerospace firms Lear Siegler and Emerson Electric before he and his wife Lucy started a mortgage company in Alexandria, VA. They successfully operated Harwood Mortgages, with their daughter Victoria, for the past 40 years. An avid golfer, Bob was the club champion at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club in Tampa, FL in his teens. Locally, he was an active member of Belle Haven Country Club for the last 25 years and also served on their finance committee.

Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucy Almakory of Houston, TX, his daughter, Victoria Harwood Bires, and his two grandchildren, Lucas and Nicole Bires of Alexandria.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude and thanks to the many friends and colleagues of Bob at Belle Haven CC and Springfield CC, his many business associates from Harwood Mortgages, and the U. S. Air Force for helping to provide him -and his family- with such a rich, wonderful and rewarding life.
